1890N "I Still Can't Say Goodbye"

Richard Hudson, a good friend of mine brought this song to me for a project he was going to do, and when I heard this song it brought back memories of when I was a little boy.  My dad, Bill Benson, was a carpenter by trade, and I had come along late in my parents' life at age 42 and I was child number 7. 

Soon after I started to crawl my dad bought me a small hammer and a piece of wood and my mother made me a nail apron to hold my nails.  I would sit for hours hammering nails into that piece of wood.  When one side became full of nails, I would turn it over and start all over again.  Many times I would smash my fingers and run to daddy for consolation, but I would be back at the practice board going at it once again.

I'm sure he was proud to see me hammering away and possibly had thoughts that I might follow in his carpentry footsteps, but as it turned out I went into the music business instead.  He always helped me build our studios, and after he retired he would randomly stop by the studio to see what I was up to.  I would be playing or directing our orchestra and I would see him quietly walk in the control room and wave, listen for a while and then leave.

In this photo I was about 4 years old, and I always wanted a hat like my daddy wore and you can see I did get one that Christmas, and I wore it proudly.

My dad passed away at age 86, but he took good care of his family.  It has been 19 years since he passed away and like the above song says "I Still Can't Say Goodbye".
